Karachi being the biggest city of Pakistan, is not less than any other city in providing best amenities for hair transplantation. The permanent solution to hair loss is hair transplantation. Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are removed from a part of the body which is known as ‘donor site’. These hair follicles are transplanted to ‘recipient site’, which is the site of baldness. Now a days, not only celebrities but common people are also opting for hair transplantation, especially for treating make pattern baldness. Moreover, hair transplantation could also be utilized for restoring eyebrows, eyelashes, chest hair, beard hair, for filling scars which are caused by surgeries or accidents.
How does Hair Transplantation differs from Skin Grafting:
In hair transplantation, only hair follicles are removed from certain site and transplanted to another. In skin grafting, grafts are taken out which contain almost all the dermis and epidermis which surrounds hair follicle. Rather than a single strip of skin, small grafts are transplanted.
The donor hair can be removed by either follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Recently, modern technology is playing its role in serving various victims of hair loss. FUE is one of the permanent techniques for hair restoration. In this procedure, individual follicular units containing 1-4 hair are harvested under local anesthesia. Tiny punctures are made at the sites for receiving these grafts, with the help of fine needles or micro blades. These punctures are made in a pattern of promoting realistic hair pattern. This procedure could either be done in one long session or various small sessions. FUE could give nature results, negating the need for large areas of scalp tissue to be removed, resulting in absence of linear scars. There are only small punctate scars after the surgery because individual follicles are removed. These scars are not even visible and any sort of post-surgical pain is declined.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
This procedure is the traditional method of hair transplantation in which linear strips of hair bearing skin are extracted. These strips could either be extracted from the side of scalp of from the back. The hair bearing strip is then divided and separated for making individual grafts. These individual grafts are then transplanted to recipient sites.
Semi permeable dressing is done right after carrying out the procedure, which helps in seepage of fluid and blood. It is applied very easily and changed daily. The vulnerable area should be protected from sun rays and shampooing is allowed two days after surgery. Shampooing is actually important as it helps in preventing formation of scabs around hair shaft.
